How Do Implants Affect Bone Density in Southlake?

Dental implants offer many advantages, not the least of which is a strong and attractive looking smile. While you and other admire the appearance of your replacement teeth, titanium posts below the gum line provide stability and even promote the growth of healthy bone tissue. In fact, there was study of women who have osteoporosis that showed what a difference dental implants could make. Keep reading to learn more about the study and how implants affect bone density in Southlake.

Dental Implants Increase Bone Density

Osteoporosis is a medical condition affecting bone health. It weakens bone tissue throughout the body. Women are more likely than men to have osteoporosis, which increases the risk for fractured and broken bones.

Osteoporosis is often treated by medication in a class called bisphosphonates. However, when bones are already weak, this class of drugs may actually cut off blood flow, thereby causing the bone to die. If this happens to a patient’s jawbone, then tooth loss is imminent.

Researchers wanted to know whether or not women taking bisphosphonates would have bone degeneration while getting dental implants. The study looked at 24 women: 12 had osteoporosis and were taking this drug and 12 did not have the disease and were not on bisphosphonates. Their remaining teeth were removed, and dental implants were placed immediately.

After one year, the researchers reported that all of the dental implants were successful. The posts were still secure, with good integration between the implant and surrounding bone. Thus, all of the women had increased bone density, which made for a secure tooth replacement.

Are You Qualified to Get Dental Implants?

The study is good news for postmenopausal women taking bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis. In general, dental implants enjoy a rate off success that exceeds 98 percent. While most people are good candidates, three important factors must be considered:

  1. Oral health. If you have been dealing with tooth loss for a long time, or if you’ve had advanced periodontal disease, then there may already be significant loss of jawbone structure. Dental implants need strong and healthy bone tissue in order to successfully integrate. Bone augmentation may be necessary if you’ve had bone loss.
  2. General health. Some medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes and certain types of cancer, can affect your ability to recover from implant surgery. People with these and other serious health concerns might want to consider non-implant replacement options.
  3. Smoking and Tobacco use. Whether you smoke cigarettes or chew tobacco, these lifestyle choices increase the risk of implant failure. Your dentist will be able to advise you.
