Berries: A Good Source of Vitamin DSometimes an active lifestyle and nutritious meals are not enough to maintain a healthy way of life. Vitamin D deficiency is common even among those who claim to consume a balanced meal of fruits and vegetables. The reason being: even the best dietary sources of vitamin D, such as salmon, aren’t loaded with enough vitamin D to suffice the daily required amount.

Tooth Decay in Toddlers: What You Need to Know About Cavities in Young Children

June 26, 2014

Shutterstock Child at DentistEvery child needs strong, healthy baby teeth. These teeth help children chew food, form words, and even help guide future adult teeth into their correct positions in the arch. Early childhood caries is a highly aggressive form of tooth decay that affects children well into their preschool years. The decay is usually the result of consuming large amounts of sugary food. The sugar serves as food for bacteria, which in turn produce acid that decay the teeth.

So you may be wondering how you can protect your child from early childhood decay. It’s actually quite simple. Avoiding sugar may seem like the obvious answer, but we have to be realistic. Occasional treats are okay and shouldn’t be discouraged. Did you know that dark chocolate is actually good for your overall dental health? However, what needs to be taken into consideration are the consistency of the food and how long the sugary substance was consumed. For example, a hard candy that dissolves in your mouth is a better choice than a sticky caramel which is difficult to chew and may remain stuck in the crevices of your child’s teeth. In reference to duration, consider whether the food was consumed in a matter of minutes or was it something that the child slowly sipped on throughout the evening, like a juice or soda. By slowly sipping the sugary drink, your child is exposed to a continuous stream of sugar, resulting in a good environment for the growth of bacteria. To avoid this, don’t let your child walk around with a bottle or a sippy cup of juice. Try and appease your child with a pacifier.

We recommend that you brush your child’s teeth after every feeding, even if they don’t actually have any teeth at the moment. You can do so by gently wiping the gums with a wet gauze or wash cloth wrapped around your index finger. When teeth do start erupting; use a tiny amount of fluoridated toothpaste to gently wipe the teeth.

Finally, keep in mind that dental checkups are just as important for your child as they are for you!  Contact our office today to learn more about childhood tooth decay and to set up your appointment. Make sure you schedule your child’s visit by the time their first tooth erupts. Early dental care is important in maintaining a healthy smile and serves as the stepping stones for a great relationship with your dental team!

The Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

June 13, 2014

Shutterstock Happy Dental Patient (2)Most people know the significance of tobacco smoking and its impacts on lung cancer, however, many are still unaware of oral cancer and the threat that it poses. Did you know that, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation, 43,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year and that out of these individuals, 8000 will die due to oral cancer?
So what exactly causes oral cancer? It’s sad to say, but sometimes our genetics play a role, however, for the most part, our lifestyle choices are what greatly increases our chances for oral cancer. The usual culprits are tobacco and alcohol. According to the Cancer Centers of America, about 80% of the people with oral cancer use tobacco and 70% are heavy drinkers.

Despite the grim prognosis for cancers of the oral cavity, early oral cancer screening is considered to be the key to the successful treatment of the disease. Here at the office, Dr. Ravi Doctor and his skilled dental team provide a thorough and comprehensive exam to all patients. The oral cavity is always systematically examined for any discrepancies in color, texture, or feel. More specifically, Dr. Doctor will feel the different areas of your mouth with his fingers for any abnormality, as well as checking whether there are any ulcerations or abnormally colored areas. So come in at your convenience and have a screening done by our skilled dental team and experience gentle dentistry.

Dr. Doctor Giving Back to the Community

May 14, 2014

shutterstock_179265305Here at Dr. Ravi Doctor’s office, we strive to be more than just a dental office.  We strive to be an integral part of the community by giving back whenever we can in any capacity.  In the spirit of inspiring others, we would like to share a couple of the things that we’ve been doing here at the office.

On April 29th, we had Jonathon from the Save-A-Smile foundation in our office.   Save a Smile is an innovative, nationally recognized, collaborative program dedicated to providing restorative and preventive dental care to children from low-income families in the community through volunteer dentists such as Dr. Doctor.  Untreated dental disease can adversely affect learning, communication, nutrition and other activities necessary for normal growth and development.  That is why Dr. Doctor is a proud supporter of this great program.

In the week leading up to Mother’s Day, Dr. Doctor provided his services free of charge to a local mother suffering from severe infections leading to the need for extractions, replacing fillings, and even a partial.  After assessing her dire situation and seeing her extreme need for dental care, Dr. Doctor decided to do what he can and not add to her financial worries.  He also donated gift certificates for a Single Mom’s Mother’s Day Brunch held annually at a local church.  Dr. Doctor does his best to live by the golden rule and hopes that others do as well.

Dr. Doctor also happens to be the dentist to Miss DFW, Miss Arlington, Miss Teen Arlington, Miss Southlake, Miss Teen Southlake, Miss Tarrant County, and Miss Hurst Euless Bedford.  What this means is that Dr. Doctor provides free preventative services to these inspiring young ladies.  From dental cleanings to exams and X-rays, Dr. Doctor does his best to keep these ladies’ smiles bright and beautiful.  If they choose to have cosmetic services done, then Dr. Doctor gives them a special discount befitting of their crown.

Dr. Ravi Doctor has two convenient locations to provide you with the quality dental care you deserve. Our Southlake dental office is just north of the D/FW International Airport, and our Arlington dental office is located just north of Interstate 20. Call us today to schedule your appointment!

Dental Implants in Arlington and Southlake

September 30, 2013

shutterstock_133605746Is the appearance of your smile marred by missing teeth?  Is your incomplete smile making it harder to eat or affecting your self-confidence?  At Dr. Ravi Doctor’s office we can help restore your smile with the most advanced tooth replacement solutions so that you’re getting state of the art smile care.  One option we offer for missing teeth is dental implants.

Dental implants are a sturdy and secure choice to replace missing teeth and complete your smile.  It is crucial that missing teeth get replaced so that the rest of your smile remains healthy.  For this procedure, we will place the implant in the area with the missing tooth which will eventually serve as the anchor for the crown that will go over the implant.  The implant body mimics the root of a natural tooth and will hold your replacement tooth firmly in place.

We can replace one missing tooth or multiple teeth with options such as an implant-supported bridge or dentures.  If you’re missing teeth, give us a call today to schedule a consultation.  Dr. Doctor will come up with the right dental implant treatment option for your smile.  Everyone deserves a full, completely smile and dental implants can be a great way to achieve this.

Dr. Ravi Doctor’s Staff Attended a Phlebotomy Course

September 4, 2013

Here at Dr. Ravi Doctor’s office, we’re committed to furthering our dental education and training to ensure that we’re always providing the best dental care to all of our patients.  On August 24th and 25th some of our staff attended a phlebotomy course in Irving, TX through Southwest Phlebotomy Certifications.

This course covered numerous aspects of phlebotomy including how to provide a great patient experience while getting the test specimens necessary.  We use phlebotomy techniques to create Platelet Rich Fibrin Membranes (PRF Membranes).  PRF Membranes are used to speed up the healing process after your dental procedure such as implants or soft-tissue grafting.  Since this involves handling blood, it’s important to make sure that our staff is well trained and up to date on the latest phlebotomy techniques.

These PRF Membranes are created from a concentration of your own blood platelets and white blood cells.  This is a special dental technology that we provide to help improve your dental experience and help get your smile back to normal faster.  If you have any questions or want to learn more about this technology, just give us a call.

Dr. Ravi Doctor has two convenient locations to provide you with the quality dental care you deserve.  Our Southlake dental office is just north of the D/FW International Airport, and our Arlington dental office is located just north of Interstate 20.  Call us today to schedule your appointment!

Full-Service Dental Implants for DFW Area Patients

July 31, 2013

dental implantsAre you missing teeth and unhappy with your smile? At Dr. Ravi Doctor’s office we can help restore your smile with dental implants. It is important to replace missing teeth to ensure your bite remains aligned and your smile functions properly.

A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is inserted into your jawbone, allowed to fuse with the bone to create a secure base, and then topped with a crown. This is a sturdy, permanent way to replace missing teeth and return health to your smile.

While many dentists offer dental implants, our office is different because we’re full-service. This means that Dr. Ravi Doctor can both place the implants and restore the teeth from his office. If you go to another dentist for your dental implants, he may send you to an oral surgeon to place the dental implants. This means another dental professional to research and locate, and another office to locate. A full-service dental office can save you time and hassle when it comes to your implant procedure.

If you’re interested in dental implants, give us a call to learn more or see if this great restorative treatment is right for your smile. A beautiful smile is the best gift you can give yourself.
